THE VOLCANO

Still an active volcano, the 4,048 ft. high La Soufriere's most recent eruption was in 1979. Previous eruptions were in 1812 and 1902. The road to the volcano leaves the coastal highway at Rabacca, and from the beginning of the foot trail the walk to the top takes about two and a half hours through a canopy of bamboo, the dappled shade of the tropical rain forest, a high altitude zone of low vegetation and a last stretch of scree before reaching the breathtaking view at the edge of the crater.
